Introduction of Portable AC
A portable air conditioner (PAC) is a self-contained portable system ideal for cooling single rooms. They typically sit on the floor and come with an installation kit for quick set up. Most models also have wheels so you can move them to different rooms, making them a nice alternative to window units. Portable air conditioners work similarly to other AC systems and have similar components.
Different Types of Portable AC
Single-Hose Monobloc Air Conditioners
Monobloc single-hose air conditioners are the simplest and quickest type of unit to use. As the name suggests, the whole air con mechanism is incorporated inside a single unit mounted on wheels. While ideal to use as an additional air conditioning system and easy to move from one room to another, monobloc units do require exterior venting. This venting is performed by a flexible hose (100–150 mm in diameter) that can be fed through a window or a vent in an external wall. Power ratings vary from 2000 to 3500 W meaning a surface area of over 35 m2 can be serviced by a single unit. However, pay attention to the level of soundproofing on the casing, as this type of air conditioning unit is often noisy (>60 dB). High-quality air conditioning units are usually also programmable by means of a built-in timer, which can be used to set start and stop times.
Dual-Hose Monobloc Air Conditioners
Monobloc dual-hose air conditioners feature two hoses: one for collecting outdoor air and the other for releasing warm air. This process allows you to cool down ambient air without bringing in any hot air from outdoors. What's more, this process doesn't involve compression, which requires more energy.
Split Air Conditioners
Portable split air conditioners work exactly like monobloc models, but consist of two separate units. The condensing and compression unit is installed outside the property, while the portable ventilation unit can be placed indoors (as long as it is connected to the external unit via a flexible hose). As you may have guessed, split models are less portable than monobloc units, since the ventilation unit has to be positioned close to the external compression unit. The major advantage of split models is that the mobile ventilation unit is lighter and less bulky, and produces much less noise! Like monobloc units, power ratings vary from 2000 to 3500W. Most split air conditioners also offer ventilation-only and dehumidifying modes. Like some portable monobloc systems, high-quality split models can also be programmed. They are, however, more expensive than their monobloc counterparts.
Self-Evaporating Portable Air Conditioners
Self-evaporating air conditioners are designed to release excess moisture along with the warm air they extract, meaning you won't have to empty a drip tray. These devices are affordable, small, lightweight and able to cool down small spaces — even if they have a fairly limited capacity. The downside is that they are noisy and are usually ineffective in rooms measuring over 15 m2. While these units provide a useful occasional solution, they lack both the efficiency and level of control of other models (i.e. monobloc or split). As such, they do not offer the cool and comfort you'd expect from a real AC unit.
Benefits of Portable AC

Low Price
When compared to other air conditioning types like ductless mini splits and especially central air conditioners, most portable air conditioners are affordable single-room comfort solutions. Of course, higher-end portable AC will cost more than a standard model, but overall, you can find an effective and high-quality portable spot cooler for less than $500.
Little Installation Required
You don't have to call a professional or break a sweat to set up a portable air conditioner. Most portable AC is simple to install and vent using the manufacturer-provided window kit. It takes just a few steps to instantly create a more comfortable indoor environment.

Portable and Convenient Comfort
Because they're so easy to set up, portable AC offer the ultimate in user-friendly comfort. Most are equipped with caster wheels, making it extremely simple to move from room to room as needed. As long as you're in a room with access to a window or sliding door so that the unit can be exhausted, you're good to go with a portable AC.
Optional Year-Round Operation
The portable air conditioners of today aren't just one-trick units. Many portable AC on the market features more than just cooling options, making them the perfect choice for year-round indoor comfort.
Common features you may find include:
Heat Mode: Even when winter rolls in, you can keep single rooms comfortable by choosing a portable AC with built-in heat. Typically used as a supplement to your other heating options, portable air conditioners with heat allow you to set your other heating source a little cooler while still staying warm in the room with the portable unit.
Dehumidification: Models with built-in dehumidification modes are great options, especially on muggy or rainy days. This setting helps to remove excess moisture from your indoor environment, leaving you feeling more comfortable. Some models even feature self-evaporation, meaning all the moisture that's collected by the unit is automatically expelled from the air conditioner.
Fan-Only Operation: Ideal for days that don't require cooling or heating, but when you still want fresh air moving throughout your room, this setting runs the fan by itself to help keep air flowing.

7 Tips to Maximize Portable AC
1. Keep the Exhaust Hose as Straight as Possible
The purpose of the exhaust hose is to carry warm air out of the room, whether through a window, door or drop ceiling. For optimal performance, it should be straight, free of kinks and bends. A twisted hose means that warm air won't be extracted efficiently, and the unit has to work harder to provide better cooling. Also, moisture in the expelled air will accumulate in the hose and eventually damage the unit, shortening its service life.
2. Close Doors and Windows
Ensuring the efficient running of your portable air conditioner requires all doors and windows to be closed. This will prevent external warm air from coming inside and internal cool air from escaping. Open doors and windows mean your portable unit will have to work a lot harder. It would help if you also used available curtains and blinds to cover windows. There are two reasons for this; to protect the air conditioner from exposure to direct sunlight and stop heat from entering the room.
3. Turn on the Air Conditioner before You Need It
Startup the air conditioner before your workforce arrives, or you plan to use a room. The reason is to maximize cooling and keep everyone comfortable. If you turn your portable AC on during the morning when the temperatures are cooler, it won't have to use as much energy to cool the space. Try not to wait for a room to be like a furnace before turning on the AC.
4. Switch off Unnecessary Heat Sources
Using a lot of electrical devices in a room will harm the performance of your portable air conditioner. The heat coming off light bulbs, computers and televisions may not seem like much, but they prevent an air conditioner from cooling down a room quickly. So, turn off those not in use.
5. Clean the Filters
To ensure proper operation and efficient cooling, the portable AC unit's filters should be cleaned regularly. This will stop them from being clogged with dust and other particles. Washing the filters in warm water with a bit of detergent at least once every few months can result in better cooling. Make sure you leave them to dry before sliding them back into the unit. For serious problems such as the AC not starting or a lack of airflow, it's best to talk to your rental company to repair or replace it.
6. Chose the Right Location for the Air Conditioner
When setting up a portable air conditioner, the right position is essential, so the unit works more efficiently, saving you money. Here are a few pointers to help you find the best location.
● Ideally, the portable air conditioner should be placed near an electrical outlet and an outside window for venting and draining. The exhaust hose can vary in length, and we advise you to keep it as short and straight as possible.
● Check that the power cable can reach the outlet without having to stretch it. It's advisable not to use an extension lead, which could be a trip hazard.
● Ensure the air conditioner is on flat, even ground. Don't place it on a table or other furniture item.
● Place the portable AC where the cool air can flow freely. So, avoid installing it behind furniture or putting anything in front of the unit that could block the airflow. Also ensure the air inlets aren't blocked either, as this will prevent the unit from removing hot air from your room.
● Avoid placing the AC near direct heat sources such as kitchen appliances and electronics, including big TV screens. A good rule of thumb is to keep them approximately three meters away from these devices.
7. Ensure Your Electrical System Meets The Unit's Power Requirements
It is essential to have a proper outlet and electricity set up when using a portable air conditioner. Look for portable air conditioners with a 10 amp power socket, which is what most wall outlets in homes and businesses have. Larger portable AC often requires a 15 amp outlet, which could be harder to find. Check they're compatible with your home or business's electrical setup when comparing air conditioners.
What Should be Considered When You Choose Portable AC
Capacity
Cooling capacity is important in two ways. First, choosing the right cooling capacity means you will be able to cool your space to a specific desired temperature. Second, choosing an insufficient cooling capacity can mean your air conditioner needs to run for longer periods of time, which may impact the lifespan of the unit and lead to higher utility bills. Portable air conditioners are rated using one of two ways: in total square footage (meaning the square footage of the largest room the unit can effectively cool), or in British thermal units (BTU). While BTU can be more confusing, the basic principle is the higher the number, the more powerful the unit. As stated, cooling capacity can be affected by many things, but in general, an 8,000 BTU unit will cool a room up to 350 square feet, one with 10,000 BTU will cover up to 450 square feet, and an air conditioning (AC) unit with 14,000 BTU will accommodate 700 square feet.
Size and Position
The AC unit you purchase will need to fit near a window with adequate space around it to operate. Similar to a window air conditioning unit, a portable model draws in air through its intake, then sends hot air through a vent tube and out the window. This might mean that you need to set aside about twice the space of the unit itself. While you should prioritize cooling capacity first, make sure you don't buy a unit that's too large for the space you have available.
Noise level
Between the motor and the fan, air conditioners can be quite noisy. However, many people would prefer home appliances to operate as quietly as possible, especially when they might be running every day for a few months. If this is a concern for you, but sure to read reviews that feature comments remarking on noise levels from the fan or motor before finalizing your choice.
Portability
If you are going to set up your portable AC unit in one room and leave it there, there's not much to worry about. But if you want the ability to roll it from the living room to the bedroom at night, then you'll want wheels. Not all units have these, so, be sure to filter your search to narrow down the list of options. Another aspect to consider is the weight of the AC unit. This specification is important if you will be frequently moving your unit up and down stairs.
Timer and Remote
Many portable air conditioners come with a timer so that you can set the unit to turn on before you get home from work or off in the evening when you can open the windows and let in the cool air from outside. This is a great feature for anyone who wants to maintain a comfortable temperature when home and save money on their energy bill. For added convenience, consider buying a smart portable AC unit that works with your smart home technology. With this type of model, you can monitor and control your unit whether you're home or away through an app on your smartphone.
Energy Efficiency
To keep your energy usage at a minimum, look for a unit that is labeled ENERGY STAR certified. This yellow sticker indicates that the appliance meets the standards set by the government to earn the designation. Additionally, you should take steps to ensure that the space you're cooling is optimized for saving energy. This can be done by limiting full sun exposure by closing blinds, shutting doors and windows to keep in cooled air, and sealing areas around your home where there are drafts. Another way to keep your eye on energy usage is by choosing a portable AC unit that connects to your smart thermostat. These models communicate wirelessly through your home Wi-Fi network to turn off when the temperature is reached, or to turn on when the humidity in the room is at a certain level. Plus, you can track energy usage on a mobile device while you're away from home and adjust as needed.
