Air conditioners come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they all operate on the same basic premise. An air conditioner provides cold air inside your home or enclosed space by actually removing heat and humidity from the indoor air. It returns the cooled air to the indoor space, and transfers the unwanted heat and humidity outside. A standard air conditioner uses a specialized chemical called refrigerant, and has three main mechanical components: a compressor, a condenser coil and an evaporator coil. These components work together to quickly convert the refrigerant from gas to liquid and back again.
Different Types of Air Conditioner
Central Air Conditioner
If you have a large home & wish to cool multiple rooms at once, then this type of air conditioning is best suited for you. A central air conditioning unit uses a split system that regulates air through ducts installed in your home. The split aspect implies that the system is a combination of two main units. The outdoor unit packs in the condenser and compressor. While the indoor unit comprises the evaporator coils & air handler. Like any typical air conditioner, central air conditioning also uses refrigerant to remove heat from the indoor air. This heat is pulled outdoors & cool air is pushed in through the ducts.
Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner
If you want better efficiency, or you want to do away with a lot of ducting, or you simply just want a portion of your home to be cooled, then opting for ductless mini-split air conditioners is a great choice. Such type of air conditioner is a combination of an outdoor unit comprising a compressor & a condenser that comes along with one or more indoor units. These indoor units are mounted on a wall and equipped with air blowers. The indoor & outdoor units are connected through tubing and, refrigerant circulates through them in variations depending on the type of usage. Since these indoor units are small and compact, each room usually gets its own unit installed that can either be used for heating or cooling purposes. Such types of air conditioners are regarded as much more efficient in energy consumption compared to some of the other options available out there but can also be heavy on the pocket if you plan on installing one in each room to cover the entire house.
Window Air Conditioner
Since window air conditioners come in different sizes, they would be suitable if you're looking to cool a single room or a small area. If you go for a large window air conditioner, you can even cool a small home, considering it is a single story or one open space. A window air conditioner is a single unit with all of its components enclosed inside. It ejects heat out of its outdoor side and blows cool air into the room on the indoor side. As the name suggests, it is installed in a window or by making a hole in the wall. Such air conditioners have a filter that slides out so that it can be cleaned regularly for full air conditioner efficiency. These air conditioners have controls on the unit & may also come with a remote.
Portable Air Conditioner
Portable air conditioners are similar to window air conditioners. They are also placed in a single unit with all its components enclosed inside, but the difference is that it is a freestanding unit and therefore can be moved from room to room. All it requires is a power outlet to power it up & access to a window where the unit's air can be exhausted from using its funnel.
Floor-Mounted Air Conditioner
Floor-mounted air conditioners are designed for convenience if you prefer a mini-split, but lack the required space for a wall mounted unit. The indoor unit of floor-mounted air conditioner rests on the floor, and the outer unit can be installed without major site preparation or any duct work. This arrangement is also ideal for spaces with tilted walls, such as attics, or building constructed with fragile materials such as glass. Easy access to the air filters makes floor-mounted air conditioners ideal for individuals with respiratory issues or people who are keen on keeping their indoor air quality as clean as possible.
Smart Air Conditioner
Smart air conditioners are a type of mini-split, window, or portable air conditioner that are IoT enabled. These air conditioners are connected to Wi-Fi and come with a native app providing global control through a smartphone. Depending on the manufacturer, these air conditioners come with numerous functionalities. Some of these include weekly scheduling, geofencing, comfy mode, temperature range control, and numerous other features. Utilizing these, you can achieve great comfort coupled with energy savings.
Geothermal Air Conditioner
Geothermal heating & cooling is considered a relatively new method, it works by utilizing the insulating properties of the earth. Since the temperatures under 4 to 6 feet of land remain consistent all year, regardless of the weather, geothermal technology takes advantage of this to heat & cool your home more efficiently. This system has piping that consists of a loop that circulates water between your home, a heat pump & the ground. They require intensive work to set up underground.
Hybrid Fuel Air Conditioner
A hybrid system is one that combines a gas furnace with an electric air-source heat pump to deliver a cost-effective & efficient performance in terms of heating & cooling. Depending on the temperature outdoors, the system automatically switches between burning fossil fuels and the usage of electricity. You program the temperature at which the system switches from heat pump to furnace, or you can make the manual switch too. During summer, the heat pump works as it functions, pulling hot air from inside your home and throwing it outdoors. During the winters, this process is reversed, and heat is distributed throughout your home. When the temperature is too cold for a heat pump to function efficiently, the furnace kicks in.
5 Benefits of Air Conditioner

Improved Indoor Air Quality
The filtration system of an air conditioner unit works to remove pollutants from the air, vastly improving its quality and limiting the damaging effects of airborne particulates. Take a hay fever sufferer, for example. In the summer months when the pollen count is high, it's impractical to have windows open - but with an air conditioner system installed they can find relief from the heat, and relief from their symptoms.
Humidity Control
High humidity can lead to problems for both your property and the health of its inhabitants. When the water vapor content in the air continually exceeds a certain threshold, it encourages the growth of mould and causes rot. In terms of health, damp and mould caused by high humidity can induce asthma attacks, cause allergic reactions, and introduce harmful bacteria into your home. An air conditioning system is the most reliable way to control humidity in the home.
Boosted Productivity
A hot, stuffy environment with poor ventilation does little to encourage productivity. It makes it difficult to concentrate, and saps our energy. A constant supply of fresh air from outdoors, however, brings the oxygen we need to stay alert, so an air conditioner system is a valuable addition to any home office space. Fresh air and comfortable conditions will help the children focus on their homework, or study effectively for their exams.
Better Quality Sleep
One of the biggest disturbances to sleep in the summer months, of course, is heat. Fans may bring some relief, but really all they're doing is circulating warm, stale air and creating noise. The same goes for window. If it's stuffy outside, having it open is of little use. An air conditioning system works quietly in the background to create comfortable sleeping conditions that help your body get the rest it needs.
A Source of Heat in Winter
It's a benefit that may not have crossed your mind, but given that most modern air conditioners are actually air source heat pumps, it means they're able to generate heat in the colder months. Heat pumps are a low carbon alternative to traditional heating systems, as well as being more energy efficient, bringing cost savings and fewer carbon emissions.
How to Maintain Your Air Conditioner
Air Conditioner Filters
The most important maintenance task that will ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner is to routinely replace or clean its filters. Clogged, dirty filters reduce the amount of airflow and significantly reduce a system's efficiency. In addition, when airflow is obstructed, air can bypass the filter and deposit dirt directly into the evaporator coil and impair the coil's heat-absorbing capacity. Replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner's energy consumption by 5% to 15%. For central air conditioners, filters are generally located somewhere along the return duct's length. Common filter locations are in walls, ceilings, or in the air conditioner itself. Room air conditioners have a filter mounted in the grill that faces into the room. Clean or replace your air conditioning system's filter or filters every month or two during the cooling season. Filters may need more frequent attention if the air conditioner is in constant use, is subjected to dusty conditions, or you have fur-bearing pets in the house.
Air Conditioner Coils
The air conditioner's evaporator coil and condenser coil collect dirt over their months and years of service. A clean filter prevents the evaporator coil from soiling quickly. In time, however, the evaporator coil will still collect dirt. This dirt reduces airflow and insulates the coil, reducing its ability to absorb heat. To avoid this problem, check your evaporator coil every year and clean it as necessary. Outdoor condenser coils can also become very dirty if the outdoor environment is dusty or if there is foliage nearby. You can easily see the condenser coil and notice if dirt is collecting on its fins. You should minimize dirt and debris near the condenser unit. Cleaning the area around the coil, removing any debris, and trimming foliage back at least 2 feet (0.6 meters) allow for adequate airflow around the condenser.
Coil Fins
The aluminum fins on evaporator and condenser coils are easily bent and can block airflow through the coil. Air conditioning wholesalers sell a tool called a "fin comb" that will comb these fins back into nearly original condition.
Condensate Drains
Occasionally pass a stiff wire through the unit's drain channels. Clogged drain channels prevent a unit from reducing humidity, and the resulting excess moisture may discolor walls or carpet.
Window Seals for Room Air Conditioners
At the start of each cooling season, inspect the seal between the air conditioner and the window frame to ensure it makes contact with the unit's metal case. Moisture can damage this seal, allowing cool air to escape from your house.
Preparing for Winter
In the winter, either cover your room air conditioner or remove and store it. Covering the outdoor unit of a central air conditioner will protect the unit from winter weather and debris.
Hiring a Professional
When your air conditioner needs more than regular maintenance, such as when it does not reduce the indoor temperature to a comfortable level, hire a professional service technician. A well-trained technician will find and fix problems in your air conditioning system.
What Should be Considered When You Choose Air Conditioner
To get the right air conditioner, the most important aspect you first need to figure out is capacity. What capacity you require will determine if the air conditioner you bought will underperform or simply be overkill. Factors to decide include the size of the room as well as ambient temperature, and how many of the walls of that room are actually exposed to the sun directly from outside (since these are likely to get hotter quickly).
Air conditioners are notorious for contributing big numbers to your electricity bill, which is why a lot of people only use them when necessary. However, whether you plan on using the air conditioner sparsely or all the time, you can regulate these costs by going for a model that has a good energy rating. The rating determines how well your air conditioner is with its power efficiency. Always try to go for a 5-star model as those will help you get the lowest usage costs in the longer run.
Non-inverter AC have the compressor running at a fixed speed. It can either be turned on or off. During use, the compressor will turn on and run till your room reaches the required temperature, then switch off, only to switch on and cool it again when the temperature starts warming again. While more expensive, inverter air conditioner offer more consistent temperatures and produces lesser noise. Look for an inverter air conditioner if you plan on using the air conditioner continuously through the year and if it's a proper, long-term investment for you. If you plan on using the appliance sparsely, a regular, non-inverter air conditioner may be enough for you.
There are some other features that you may need. Some air conditioner will come with filters and that will help keep air clean and cool at the same time. Others may also double up as heaters. If it gets too cold in your area during winters, this may be worth looking into. Other features like sleep timers, fan swing modes, etc. are common to most air conditioner these days, but check for them regardless.
